Tarot cards have a rich history that dates back to the 15th century in Europe. Initially, they were used for playing a game called tarocchi in Italy. The earliest known decks were hand-painted and commissioned by wealthy families. Over time, tarot evolved into a tool for divination and spiritual guidance.
By the 18th century, tarot cards had gained mystical and occult associations, thanks in part to figures like Antoine Court de Gébelin, who theorized that tarot symbols held ancient wisdom. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw the development of many of the tarot traditions we recognize today, such as the Rider-Waite-Smith deck created by Arthur Edward Waite and artist Pamela Colman Smith in 1909.
Modern tarot decks continue to evolve, reflecting contemporary artistic styles and spiritual practices, while remaining a popular means of introspection and divination.
